Awareness and Screening Camp

Janata Clinic Health Awareness and Specialist Screening at Shreetole, Basundhara

Janata Clinic conducted a health awareness program followed by screening and specialist consultation session at Shreetole, Basundhara on 30 January 2018.

Janata Clinic conducted a one day health awareness and specialist screening camp at Shreetole, Basundhara. The camp, coordinated by Naya Paila Samudayik Addhyayan Kendra, a local community group and supported by Nepal National Hospital, extended screening services to around 150 participants among which 38 were diagnosed with kidney problems and 18 with pulmonary diseases, mainly asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The aim of this program was to make people understand the need of regular health examinations through group discussions and mass screening.

Studies show that 1 in every 10 individuals i.e., 10% of total population is at a risk of developing Kidney Disease – the rate of prevalence being twice as much in males as in females. Among the 150 participants who underwent dipstick test for urine analysis, 38 were diagnosed with initial stage Kidney problem, 40% of diagnosed cases were severe and require immediate medical attention. The cause identified was ignorance in patients with diabetes and hypertension in some participants and lack of awareness in others. Consultant Nephrologist, Dr. Archan Shumsher Rana delivered a presentation on the risk factors and prevention of Kidney Disease while highlighting the importance of regular kidney screening.

Similarly, Consultant Pulmonologist Dr. Prakash Poudel facilitated the seminar on pulmonary diseases in relation to the increasing pollution levels in Kathmandu. The symptoms of Asthma and COPD are, more often than not, misinterpreted by the elderly as a natural shortening of breath. Breaking this myth, Janata Clinic was able to encourage the participants to go through simple screening to identify any possible disease conditions. The screening was supported by Cipla Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd., and comprised of a thorough assessment of respiratory function in the participants by Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) through a spirometer, followed by patient education about the respiratory disease and medication usage.

Among the 83 patients assessed, 18 were found to have acute or chronic respiratory problems including bronchitis, asthma, and COPD. Those patients requiring management with inhalers were provided with the appropriate devices along with a thorough instruction on its usage. Besides these, minor cases of cough and cold were also observed.

A simple Dipstick or Pulmonary function test can save one from a lifetime of suffering, hospital visits and costly management of disease. Team Janata Clinic is continuously working to help people stay aware and go through regular screenings to stay healthy.
