The symptoms of Asthma and COPD are, more often than not, misinterpreted by the elderly as a natural shortening of breath. Breaking this myth, Janata Clinic conducted a Pulmonary disease awareness and screening camp at Dhokshan, a Tamang community in the outskirts of Kathmandu.
The camp was facilitated by Dr. Ashesh Dhungana, Consultant Pulmonologist at Bir hospital and supported by Cipla Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd. It comprised of a thorough assessment of respiratory functioning in the patients by Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) through a spirometer, followed by patient education about the respiratory disease and medication usage.
Among the 53 patients assessed, 15 were found to have acute or chronic respiratory problems including bronchitis, asthma, COPD and tuberculosis. Those patients requiring management with inhalers were provided with the appropriate devices along with a thorough instruction on its usage. Besides these, minor cases of cough and cold were also observed.
